The new 500kV transmission line will transport power from renewable energy resources within California’s Imperial Valley to San Diego.

Construction on the underground portion of the power line, which is expected to be completed in 2012, started this week in Alpine.

Last month, California Public Utilities Commission issued a ‘notice to proceed’ to SDG&E, clearing the way for the utility to begin construction on the underground section of the transmission line in Alpine.

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said that the transmission line opens the door for additional green investments and job creation in the Imperial Valley, while helping the state meet its renewable energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals.
