State-owned oil company Saudi Aramco has awarded a contract to McDermott International to provide engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) services for the Safaniya field.

Under the contract, McDermott will provide full suite of EPCI services including design, fabrication, installation and pre-commissioning of nine slipover jackets, 10 production deck modules, an electrical distribution platform and associated cables and pipelines.

The project is part of a bigger program, which aims to replace the aging facilities with electrified platforms to increase potential of the fields.

The contract has been awarded as part of an existing long-term agreement with Saudi Aramco.

The Safaniya oil field is located 125 miles (201km) north of Dhahran in the Arabian Gulf and is considered to be the largest offshore oil field in the world in terms of production.

Estimated to contain 37 billion barrels of oil reserves, the oil field is owned and operated by the Saudi Aramco.

McDermott said it will start work shortly and the contract be reflected in its 2017 fourth quarter backlog.

McDermott Middle East and Caspian vice-president Linh Austin said: “We plan to execute much of the project from our Al Khobar office and Dammam fabrication facility, increasing our local content in country, in support of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and Aramco’s In-Kingdom Total Value Add (IKTVA) program.”

McDermott’s facilities in Dubai and Dammam, Saudi Arabia will take up the construction work while vessels from its global fleet are scheduled to perform the installation work.
