The Crown-1 well located about 500km north of Broome, around 60km west of the Ichthys field and 20km east of the Poseidon field is in water depths at 440m.
The company performed wireline logging and confirmed 61m of net gas pay in the Jurassic-aged Montara, Plover and Malita reservoirs between 4,873m and 4,998m and did not encounter gas and water.
Santos Exploration head Bill Ovenden said, "The Crown discovery is well positioned, in close proximity to existing and proposed LNG projects in the Browse basin and other material exploration prospects."
The company also acquired pressure data from different points which suggested gas flow at a high rate and has recovered multiple condensate-bearing gas samples to surface.
Santos will now proceed with the drilling of the well to a proposed total depth of 5,200m.
With 30% interest in the WA-274-P, Santos is the operator, while Chevron with 50% and INPEX with 20% are the joint venture partners.
