Reliance Energy Ltd (REL) has acquired the 280MW Urthing Sobla hydro power project on the Dhauliganga river in India’s Pithoragarh district, Uttaranchal State.

REL took part in a two stage bidding process involving pre-qualification and financial bids in which the bidding criterion was the amount of premium which the bidder would pay to the government of Uttaranchal.

The bids were opened on 5 April and REL expects a formal letter of award soon. Urthing Sobla will be the first hydro power project to be developed by the company.
