For the improvement of electric power supply system in Freetown, JICA has constructed the substation under the first phase of the project. Under the second phase, JICA would construct a power house and related facilities at the Kingtom Power station; it includes the installation of 10 Mega Watts diesel engine generators also.
During the dry season, the 10 Mega watts power plant would enhance the generating capacity in Freetown and increment power supply from Bumbuna.
Keiichi Katakami, Japanese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, said that during 2007, the agreement worth $5 million was signed for the project.
Keiichi Katakami continued that the projects include installation and procurement works of 33 kilo vats (kV) and 11 kV distribution facilities between the Kingtom power station and the Regent sub station, the construction of the Regent sub station, and the procurement of maintenance tools.
Dr Zubairu Kaloko, the general manager of the National Power Authority (NPA), said that the total budget for the project is $22, 4 million, of which US$165.640 is funded by NPA that represents funding from government of Sierra Leone. For phase one the budget allocation was US$5.7 million and for the second phase an amount of $16.7 million were allocated.
