A PANEL APPOINTED BY INDIA’S Supreme Court to look into the environmental impacts of raising the height of Sardar Sarovar dam, in the state of Gujarat by another 10m has ruled in favour of the proposal.
The panel debated the objections raised by the environmentalists including the Narmada Bachao Andolan (Save Narmada Movement). The environmental sub-group’s nod for raising the dam’s height is conditional to the implementation of relief and rehabilitation measures as directed by the Supreme Court.
Environmentalist Medha Patkar has lead activists of the NBA in demonstrating against the proposed increase in height.
