Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is situated in the town of Metsamor (20 km to 30 km south from Yerevan) and was brought to operation in 1976. Presently, only the second unit is operating with a planned capacity of 407.5 megawatt. The power plant produces around 40% to 50% of Armenia’s energy.

The plant has been operated by Inter RAO UES CJSC, owned by Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation since 2003 to 2013. According to the assessment of some experts the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant can be operated until 2016.
