The €90m project has been developed by Prysmian Group as a part of a contract awarded by INELFE, a joint venture between Spanish grid operator Red Electrica de España (REE) and the French grid operator Réseau de Transport d’Électricité (RTE) in 2010.
The INELFE project involved a ±320kV extruded HVDC underground cable turnkey system as well as two 1000MW bipolar circuits along a 64km land route, with 8.6km in a purpose-built tunnel throughout the Pyrenees.
The cable link, which has been classified as a Priority Project by the European Union (EU), is expected to enhance the transmission capacity between France and Spain while boosting sources diversification and supply security.
In Spain, the project will facilitate the renewable energy usage by enhancing grid system stability.
Recently, Prysmian commissioned the first and the second HVDC offshore grid connections, BorWin2 and HelWin1, and is also a nearing completion of further two DC offshore grid connection projects, SylWin1 and HelWin2, and one DC land connection, Skagerrak 4.
Additionally, the company is under contract to develop the HVDC cable systems for the DolWin3 and BorWin3 projects.
