Sutton Plant is a coal-fired power plant situated in North Carolina. The plant is to withdraw three coal-fired units, with a combined power generation capacity of 397MW, which are situated at the H.F. Lee Plant. The company plans to build a new, 950MW natural gas-fired power plant at the adjacent Wayne County Energy Complex.
The conversion from a coal-fired unit to a combined-cyle facility fueled with natural gas, would help the company to reduce carbon, sulfur and mercury emissions, to reach compliance with state emission reduction limits.
The company has applied for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity (CPCN) from the North Carolina Utilities Commission, under new laws approved in July 2009. The new facility is expected to cost around $900m, and its due to commence its operations in early 2013.
The new infrastructure includes the enhancements to a natural gas pipeline and an electric transmission system.
