DEREGULATION

The National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES) has postponed the privatisation of Comanhia Energtica de Alagoas (Ceal) due to the lack of interested companies. The National Council of Deregulation is currently studying the problem.

Ceal was due to be sold in December 1998 at the Rio de Janeiro Stock Exchange for a minimum price of $400 million. However, the only consortium that had deposited warranties pulled out of the bidding process at the last moment.
