Finnish engineering company Pöyry has secured owner’s engineer contract for the 400MW Ashuganj Combined Cycle Power Plant (East) in Bangladesh.

The contract has been awarded by Ashuganj Power Station (APSCL), a company under the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).

The 400MW Ashuganj Combined Cycle Power Plant (East) will be installed in place of an old and inefficient 150MW steam turbine generation plant. The plant is located in Ashuganj in Brahmanbaria district, 90km northeast from the capital Dhaka.

As per the contract, Pöyry’s scope will include supervision of demolition, disposal and site preparation supervision, construction supervision, testing and commissioning supervision for a period of 36 months. The contract is expected to start in the fourth quarter of this year.

APSCL project director Md. Anwar Hossain said: "It is a great pleasure having selected Pöyry as our Owner's Engineer, we trust that their competent advice will ensure the successful completion of the project."

Pöyry's Thermal Power & Renewables business regional director Michael Gruenenfelder said: "The plant will provide cost-competitive electricity to the people of Bangladesh as the country aims to rapidly increase electricity supply as part of 'Vision 2021'."

Bangladesh aims to develop an integrated and developed energy sector with a diversified fuel mix and increase its electricity supply to 20,000 MW by 2021.
