The NaS battery developed by POSCO is charged and discharged by solid ceramic electrolyte moving between the positive and negative poles through sodium ion and is claimed to provide more than three times higher density than existing batteries with a lifespan of more than 15 years.
Unlike lithium ion batteries used as secondary energy storage systems, the materials used in NaS batteries are not high and are designed to hold up to 10MW to 1GW of energy in contrast to the existing lithium ion batteries capacity of less than 5MW.
As the smart grid business expands, the energy storage battery market, which includes ESS core technologies such as NaS batteries is forecasted to grow from approximately $450m in 2010 to $10bn in 2020, an average yearly growth of more than 35%.
Through the development of the NaS battery, POSCO expects it to become a professional energy company and develop ESS through continuous R&D, taking Korea’s energy storage device technology to the next level.
