The explosion on the natural gas pipeline about 15km inside the Turkish border did not result in any casualties.

National Iranian Gas (NIGC) CEO Hamidreza Araghi told the Fars News Agency: "An explosion hit the Iran-Turkey natural gas pipeline in the eastern Turkish province of Agri last night and Iran has stopped gas flow to that country immediately after being informed of the incident.

"Iran is waiting for the Turkish administration’s explanations about the cause of this explosion and suspends its gas export to Turkey via this pipeline by then."

The Turkish Government is expected to initiate an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.

Turkish state gas company Botas official said that repair work is currently underway at the damaged pipeline.

Local media reports have speculated that the explosion resembled the work of Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).

Iran exports around 10 billion square meters of gas annually to Turkey.
