The company has said that the new rate will fund expanded energy efficiency programs, increased customer programs, higher operating costs, and new investments in the gas distribution system in the Philadelphia suburbs.
The rate changes the monthly service charge from $7.20 per month to $10.75 per month for residential customers and PECO’s gas delivery, or distribution charge, which is based on usage.
PECO said that the changes taking place on January 1, 2009 do not affect the gas commodity charge, which reflects the actual cost of the gas itself and is adjusted quarterly to reflect the wholesale market.
Based in Philadelphia, PECO is an electric and natural gas utility subsidiary of Exelon Corporation. The company claims to serve 1.6 million electric and 484,000 natural gas customers in southeastern Pennsylvania and employs about 2,500 people in the region.
