The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved a 1.7% uprate for units 1 and 2 of Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station in North Carolina.

NRC said that after a "careful evaluation" it determined that Duke could safely increase the reactors’ power output primarily through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow.

McGuire, which started up in the early 1980s, comprises two 1100 MW Westinghouse pressurized water reactors.

According to NRC, Duke intends to implement the increase during its spring 2014 refueling outage at unit 2, and in the fall 2014 outage at unit 1.
