Reservoirs of the dam being developed on the Xingu River in the state of Pará are expected to generate huge amounts of methane putting the lives of 40,000 residents of the region in jeopardy, reported the Associated Press.
About 100 ethnic Indians, fishermen and other activists led by a group called Xingu Vivo have occupied the construction site to oppose the construction of hydroelectric dam that has a planned installed capacity of 11,233MW.
Xingu Vivo spokesperson Maira Irigaray reportedly told the AFP "This singular alliance of Indians and fishermen is aimed at blowing the whistle on the construction company which has not kept promises made in June, during the Rio sustainable development summit."
The spokesperson concluded that the protestors would continue their occupation until their demands were met.
