The rapid-charge points to be installed at green electricity company Ecotricity’s ‘Electric Highway’ charging network will be powered by 100% renewable energy.
Cars can be recharged from empty to 80% in 30 minutes compared to conventional charging points that usually take several hours to provide enough power for modern electric cars.
Commenting on the rapid-charge points Nissan Motor GB managing director Jim Wright remarked that often EV owners were wary of the driving range on their vehicles.
"By introducing fast charging infrastructure at strategic motorway service stations, Nissan and Ecotricity are removing that worry and making EVs practical to a whole new selection of buyers," said Wright.
Ecotricity founder Dale Vince added, "With charging times so vastly reduced, you’ll be able to drive an electric car from London to Birmingham and fill up the battery along the way, in a time not too dissimilar to filling up a petrol car."
