The Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences’ Institute proposed a new design for wind turbines, with rotors exchanged for Archimedean screws. The advantage of such a design is the large blade surface area, enabling it to produce more energy. Spiral rotors can be made from thin metal, and act as strengthening rigid ribs to the hub. As a result, the rotor assembly is light.
It works at low wind speeds, and does not require a mechanism for orienting itself toward the wind stream or regulating revolutions. The screw makes less noise, generates almost no radio or television interference, and poses less danger to birds.
