A feasibility study for a new 520MW hydroelectric plant in Vietnam’s northwestern province has been completed.

The two-turbine Huoi Quang power plant, in Than Uyen district, Lai Chau, should generate 1.84BkWh/yr.

Construction of the project, which will begin in late 2006, is estimated to cost more than US$560M. The first turbine is expected to generate electricity in September 2009.

The Huoi Quang plant will be the fourth largest hydro plant in the country, after the Son La (2400MW), Hoa Binh (1900MW), and Lai Chau (1200MW).

About 980 households with nearly 6500 people will be relocated for the plant’s construction.
