The 3MW Urgut hydroelectric power plant was inaugurated by Uzvodenergo in Uzbekistan's Samarkand region in early September, according to the Interfax news agency.

The plant, which cost US$5.6M to construct, will generate up to 12MkWh of electricity a year.

Uzvodenergo is currently constructing seven hydroelectric power plants at a cost of US$240M under a government programme adopted in 1995. Small hydroelectric power plants are becoming economically viable in Uzbekistan as the country is faced with increasing prices of other types of energy.
