Construction of the project incurred a cost of $150m and was largely funded by the China Development Bank amongst other lenders.
Commenting on the project Fiji Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama remarked that the project will save the country $24m in diesel costs per annum.
"This dam will generate 100 million units of electricity a year that will power our progress -extending power lines to homes in the villages, in the farming areas, in the cities, and tobusinesses everywhere.
"The new energy created by this dam is clean energy. My government together with FEA (FijiElectricity Authority) is committed to developing clean, renewable and affordable sources," added Bainimarama.
China-based Sinohydro Corporation was the construction contractor for the project.
