According to the project plans, two 500MW class IGCC plants would be constructed in Fukushima Prefecture in order to help promote local industrial recovery.
The consortium includes Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Mechatronics Systems (MHI-MS).
The consortium has already begun the newly contracted design work.
MHPS is responsible primarily for designing the gasification and combined-cycle power generation equipment; MHI is handling the gas refining equipment; Mitsubishi Electric is handling power generation and electrical equipment; and MHI-MS is designing the wastewater treatment facilities.
The coal-fired thermal power facility project of TEPCO comprises construction of two IGCC plants — one at the power provider’s own Hirono Power Station (Futaba-gun), and the other at the Nakoso Power Plant (Iwaki City), to be operated by Joban Joint Power.
Joban Joint Power is partially owned by TEPCO.
MHPS’s IGCC systems are claimed to be efficient coal-fired power generation plants incorporating environmentally harmonic technologies, which have been developed exclusively in Japan.
