Water treatment

Under the public-private partnership agreement, the company will develop the project which will supply 40% of Kigali’s potable water.

World Bank Group member International Finance Corporation (IFC) advised the Government of Rwanda on structuring the project, and the government went ahead to float a competitive bidding process, which was won by Metito.

Metito will be financing, design, constructing, operating and maintaining the plant, which will be located in Kanzenze in the South Eastern part of Kigali.

According to IFC, the plant will take two years to complete and upon completion, it will be capable of supplying 40,000 m3 of treated water every day.

The water supply from the plant will supplement the existing water supplies.

In future, transmission pipelines to three storage reservoirs are likely to be added to the plant.

The Government of Rwanda previously committed to provide 100% water supply in Kigali by 2017, and the partnership with Metito is expected to help the government get closer to its goal.

Metito CEO Mutaz Ghandour said: "This is an important milestone for Metito as we join hands for the first time with the enlightened government and people of Rwanda in what we know will be a long and mutually beneficial partnership.

"We are genuinely honoured to be part of this sustainable and visionary project that will serve the people of Rwanda today and for generations to come."
