Municipal public utility, Memphis Light, Gas and Water (MLGW), has received approval from the Memphis City Council for its $10.1m budget expenditure to buy 60,000 electric, gas and water smart meters from Elster Solutions.

The utility had already notified selected homeowners about the smart meters distribution.

Later in 2013, MLGW will install these smart meters at 24,000 homes in Memphis and Shelby County.

Once completed, MLGW will have 61,000 smart meters with its current 1,000 smart meters in place through a three-year smart grid demonstration pilot.

The smart meter expansion is anticipated to be completed in mid-2014, while MLGW aims to fully implement smart meters by 2020.
