Summit Group chairman Muhammed Aziz Khan was quoted by Dhaka Tribune as saying to reporters the company will able to supply electricity from the single-cycle plant by the end of November 2013.
”We’ll be supplying from the power plant at a time when Dhaka city is facing a sudden deficit,” Khan added, expressing hopes that the government will ensure gas supply to the plant to facilitate low cost electricity supply to the grid.
The electricity supply represents around one-fifth of the existing electricity supply shortage in the country.
The initial production from the 335MW plant is scheduled to come from diesel, whereas the remaining 115MW is expected to come in July 2014, with the completion of the combined cycle turbine.
An unknown official was quoted by the news agency as saying that the cost of electricity from the plant will be above Tk11 per unit as it would run on diesel, and will drop down to Tk2.03 per unit as soon as the gas supply starts.
Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) Company Affairs member engineer Tamal Chakraborty said the company will have to offer a subsidy of Tk7.50 per unit for the electricity generation from the plant as long as it uses diesel as the input.
