Massey Energy has opened a sales branch office in Lugano, Switzerland to facilitate and increase coal sales into global markets. Massey European Sales is a continuation of Massey's deliberate strategy to increase production and sales of metallurgical coal, the company said.

Massey believes that the supply of metallurgical coal will continue to tighten as the recovery in the global manufacturing sector continues.

Baxter Phillips, Jr, president of Massey Energy, said: “As the world economies continue to emerge from the global recession, our European sales office will help us to increase metallurgical coal sales and take full advantage of improving market conditions.”

The company said that the new sales office is centrally located in Europe that will help it better serve its existing European customers and identify and establish new customers in Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

Massey also hired Andrea Penengo to head its new European sales office. Mr Penengo was most recently Raw Material sales manager for East Metals, a subsidiary of the Evraz Group.
