The new recycling program will enable the participating customer to discard old, inefficient fridges and freezers that cost the owners up to $150 a year on their electric bills, and earn $50 in return.
The program allows a maximum of two units to be removed from each household and all must be secondary units, in working order and have an inside measurement of 10 cubic feet or more.
This new program does not involve any purchase on the part of the customer to participate in the refrigerator and freezer recycling offer. The interested customers can schedule a pickup by making a call or visiting Mass Save’s website.
In addition to all Nstar Electric residential customers, the Mass Save fridge and freezer recycling program is also available to other participating utilities and energy service providers throughout Massachusetts.
Penni Conner, vice president of customer care at Nstar, said: “Our energy auditors find second fridges or freezers in the basements of many of the homes they visit. Customers are so surprised to learn how much energy those old units are wasting that we’re expecting participation in our new recycling program to be strong.”
