In a bid to reduce dependence on gas-fired capacity Malaysia is planning to increase in hydro power generation to 30% of the total capacity over the next decade.

Despite huge gas reserves, Malaysia hopes to reduce the contribution of gas-fired capacity from more than 70% to 45% of the total portfolio. Energy, water and communications minister Lim Keng Yaik has urged power producers to reappraise hydro as part of this strategy.

Currently, just 5.5% of capacity comes from hydro.
