This move comes as part of IKEA’s plans to invest £1.5bn in wind energy and solar by 2015.
The Carrickeeny Wind Farm, which is being constructed by Mainstream in Leitrim in the North West of Ireland, is slated to become operational in early 2014 at which point IKEA will purchase the plant.
Commenting on the deal, IKEA UK and Ireland Sustainability head Joanna Yarrow said the company’s investment in renewable energy business will not only lower CO2 emissions from its operations in Ireland, but will also help in controlling company’s electricity costs.
"Companies, individuals or governments – we all have responsibility to address the resource dilemma and commit to a more sustainable future. Producing our own, affordable, renewable electricity gets us one step closer to becoming completely energy independent by 2020, while ensuring our commercial success," added Yarrow.
Following the sale of the project, IKEA will own and operate around 137 wind turbines.
