India’s Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has started the operations of gas turbines at two large gas-based power projects in Bangladesh.
The company has commissioned 150MW gas turbine for Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB)’s 225MW combined cycle (dual fuel) power plant at Sikalbaha in Chittagong district.
L&T’s second 280MW gas turbine has been commissioned on North West Power Generation’s Ltd (NWPGCL) combined cycle power plant (360 MW) development project at Bheramara in Kushtia district.
Both power plants have been connected to the grid, helping to generate more green electricity in the country.
In August 2014, L&T had secured engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Sikalbaha project from BPDB.
The firm, which installed Siemens’s advanced class steam turbines at the project, started work on the project in April 2015
In July 2014, Japan firm – Marubeni secured the contract from NWPGCL for the Bheramara project. Later, L&T was selected as the EPC subcontractor for the project.
For the project, L&T delivered advanced steam turbines, which were purchased from Japanese firm Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems
Once fully operational, the two power facilities are expected to generate around 635MW of electricity.
The scope of the EPC contract is comprised of design, detailed engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the power plant on a turnkey basis.
L&T’s engineering joint venture, L&T-Sargent & Lundy was involved in the plant integration and detailed engineering of both the projects.
In addition, L&T Power is working as an EPC subcontractor for another 400 MW gas based power plant at Bibiyana in Sylhet district, which is expected to be operational between 2018 and 2019.
