Swiss Green Electricity Management Group (SEMG) has selected Leclanche, a Switzerland-based energy storage development company, for the development of 20MW or 10MWh grid-scale energy storage project near the city of Chicago, US.

Leclanche will be the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor and battery energy storage system supplier for the Marengo project in Chicago.

Marengo 20MW/10MWh grid scale energy storage claimed to be one of the largest and fully commercial battery storage projects to be developed in North America. It is being developed for the PJM Interconnection, a regional market transmission operator.

The project will be interconnected and will be used by Commonwealth Edison Company’s electric grid and also provide frequency regulation service for PJM. The project is being developed by GlidePath Power.

The storage facility will be instantaneous in providing real-time frequency regulation while helping PJM to deliver electric services at lower cost and higher quality to its end users in 13 states and District of Columbia.

GlidePath CEO and founder Dan Foley said: “Next generation battery storage technology is creating acleaner and more efficient electrical systems across the US.

“We are looking forward to working again with Leclanché as we focus on developing new projects that provide reliable electricity to the grid and end-users.”

Leclanche says that the increase of renewables in electricity mix can pose challenges to the stability of the grid. Such uncertainties can be reduced by adopting to grid-scale energy storage systems, which are low cost and support grid’s stability, the company added.

Leclanché CEO Anil Srivastava said: “The formation of SGEM and its acquisition of projects sends a strong signal that international investors are recognizing the tremendous potential of this exciting new infrastructure asset class.

“The pipeline of similar projects will continue to generate a high-growth demand in North America. Leclanché is focused on executing those projects, both on cost and on time.

“The Marengo Energy Storage Project leads the way to additional future projects and we are convinced that, thanks to investors such as SGEM, we will continue to play a leading role in the energy storage industry.”
