Kyrgyzstan has invested US$1.5M this year in modernising its Toktogul hydroelectric power plant, according to the Interfax news agency.

The investment is from earnings from electricity exports to Russia, said Sagynbek Dordoyev, general director of the Power Plants electricity generator. Half of the plant’s equipment has been replaced with equipment purchased from Russia’s Mosizolit and Elektrozavod, and Ukraine’s Zaporozhtransformator.

Dordoyev noted that the plant is vital for Kyrgyz electricity production, and for the management of water resources in neighbouring countries.

The Toktogul hydro plant exported 714MkWh of electricity to Russia last year, and 230MkWh in the first half of this year.
