To promote solar energy as an alternative source and counter the effects of climate change the Japanese government is funding the clean energy promotion project in Male through its Official Development Assistance (ODA).

With the first phase of the project already complete, it has helped the island nation offset 146 tons of CO2 per annum.

First phase covered five locations with a combined 395kW of solar power with generating 465,227kWh power annually. The second phase will see another 280kW installed at five additional locations.

Given the nation’s propensity to experience typhoons each module will be reinforced with additional support.

Maldives with an average ground level of 5ft above sea level is very vulnerable to rising sea level caused by global warming, and therefore is an advocate of arresting the effects of climate change.
