Under the contract, Kurion evaluated its MVS’ performance to encapsulate sludge stored at the Hanford K-Basins spent fuel pool and prepare waste forms suitable for disposal as remotely handled transuranic waste at the DOE Waste Isolation Pilot Plant in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

Kurion used its patented MVS technology to study the result of mixing the uranium metal bearing sludge with glass formers and treating it at increased temperatures to encapsulate and immobilize the sludge in a glass matrix.
