Johnson Controls, Inc. (Johnson Controls) has introduced variable air volume (VAV) boxes in its line of commercial comfort systems. The commercial comfort systems has factory-installed controls and factory-configured components that offer design-build contractors simple installation, a compact footprint, design flexibility, energy efficiency and other environmental benefits.

By expanding the line to include Johnson Controls VAV boxes, the company is responding to customers that require the additional efficiency and comfort features a VAV system provides.

The Series 10, 20, 40 and 100 single packaged units are by-products of the marriage between York and Johnson Controls, combining innovative equipment and integrated controls into one extremely efficient, easy-to-operate building solution, said Russ Carfagno, program manager for commercial systems at Johnson Controls.

It is designed to deliver the highest energy cost savings of any equipment in its class, the Series 10 provides superior efficiency ratings (up to 11.5 EER/80% SSE) in a light commercial HVAC unit. The system provides a cooling capacity of 6 ½ to 12 ½ tons and uses environmentally responsible R-410A refrigerant.

Factory-packaged controls that consist of self-tuning algorithms make set-up and programming easy. No programming or specialized controls knowledge is needed to run the system. The sleek, system manager has an integrated, browser-based interface for remote monitoring, accessible by its own color touch screen display.

A single cabinet size and common footprint make it easy to install the Series 10 on a curb, slab or structural steel. A rigid, full perimeter base rail allows three-way forklift access, and overhead rigging simplifies the installation process. In addition, each unit comes completely wired, piped, charged and tested.

The Series 10’s convertible air-flow feature helps in lessen cutting sheet metal in the field, and gas and electric knockouts at the bottom and side of the unit provide easy access. In addition service-friendly features include easy access to the control compartment, compressors, filters and heating section, and a single assembly that moves the motor and blower out for inspections and servicing.

The Series 10 unit has two compressors and independent refrigeration circuits to ensure reliability and foil-faced insulation enhance indoor air quality. Available in cooling only, cooling with electric heat and cooling with gas heat configurations; the unit offers a variety of factory- and field-installed options to meet specific application requirements.

The Series 10 single packaged unit combines these other Johnson controls commercial comfort systems, available in a range of cooling and heating capacities:

Series 5: 3 – 5 ton cooling/40-80 MBH heating

Series 20: 15 – 25 ton cooling/240-320 MHB heating

Series 40: 25 – 40 ton cooling/200-560 MBH heating

Series 100: 50 – 60 ton cooling/300-600 MBH heating

Each of these Commercial Comfort Systems features the ingenuity, engineering and craftsmanship architects and engineers have come to expect from Johnson Controls, noted Carfagno. We’ll continue to monitor customer feedback, responding with product enhancements that provide customers with a complete line of engineered solutions that meet the unique challenges of the commercial and design-build markets.
