Jammu and Kashmir has laid down a policy for the construction and execution of mini and micro hydel projects of less than 25 megawatt (MW) capacity through its independent power project (IPP) scheme. Ten small hydel units have been allotted under IPP in first phase by the Jammu and Kashmir State Power Development Corporation Limited (JKSPDC). Totally INR70 billion have been estimated for the construction of 1200 MW capacity Sawalkote project.

The state government Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Minister Nawang Rigzin Jora said that Sawalkote project’s implementation could not be taken up as it has been on hold due to stay by the court.

The project included under IPP scheme are 10 MW Hydro Power Project (HPP) at Athwatoo, 10 MW Tangmarg HPP, 12 MW Boniyar HPP, 4 MW Kahmil HPP, 22.50 MW Aharbal HPP, 5 MW Brenwar HPP, 12 MW Hirapura HPP, 15 MW Ranjala Dunadi HPP, 5 MW

Jora further continued that detailed project report for 240 MW capacity Kirthai power project has been framed by central water commission at the cost of INR12.5798 billion as per price index of 2003, which has been revised at a cost of INR15 billion as per the index of September 2008.
