In 2009, the Institute began a research to develop a CCS technology to prevent large quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) from being released into the atmosphere from fossil-fueled power plants.
ITRI’s CO2 capture system has showed same results when installed at a cement factory, as it did at a power plant.
The new technology will reduce CO2 capture cost from the current international level of more than $45 per metric ton to below $26.
ITRI has been operating a CO2 capture equipment on a trial basis at the Taiwan Cement’s cement factory in eastern Taiwan, reports Economic Daily News.
ITRI Green Energy and Environmental Research Laboratories’ director Tung Chien-hsiang said that the cooperative venture between the ITRI and Taiwan Cement highlighted the feasibilty of fully integrating CCS technology into Taiwan’s cement sector.
