Dam projects have been highlighted in official talks between Iran and Azerbaijan as an area for co-operation.

On a state visit to Baku, Azerbaijan, the Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said the countries had agreed to look to co-operate on a number of infrastructure and energy projects, which included dam projects as well as exchange of technical and engineering services.

Iran is undertaking a major domestic programme of dam building to expand the national water resources. Earlier this month the Ministry of Water Affairs said 18 new dams should be in operation by mid-March 2008.

Including some of those due to be finished early next year, the ministry has said there are 88 big dams under construction in the country.
