THE BRAHMAPTURA BASIN HAS come out top in a ranking study of all of India’s river basins, devised to prioritise development of the country’s hydro potential. The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has submitted a ranking study of 52 potential hydro sites for all river basins.

The ranking has used ten major parameters, based on their applicability to each project, including the type of scheme, height of the dam, length of tunnel, and the status of upstream or downstream hydro development.

Depending on the points, schemes were graded from A to E in decreasing order of their potential. Brahmaputra has 52 of 98 sites awarded grade A, while the Ganga and Indus basins have 20 and 11 sites respectively. East flowing rivers also have 11 A grade sites.
