The construction and commissioning was carried out jointly with General Electric, under a €1,470m contract awarded by SKD, a corporation set up by Algerian gas and electricity and hydrocarbon companies, Sonelgaz and Sonatrach.
The contract covered the design, equipment procurement, construction and assembly of the plant.
Located in Koudiet Edrauch, the Koudiet gas-steam combined cycle plant is expected to supply energy to nearly four million people in Algeria, representing 18% of the country’s total electricity consumption.
The start up represents a significant step toward achieving Algeria’s 2012 to 2017 strategic plan, which seeks the production of around 10,000 MW energy using gas, according to the company.
Apart from other companies in the group, Iberdrola also carries out turnkey projects for and third parties in the fields of generation, nuclear power, grids and renewable energy.
