Said to be Europe’s largest of its kind, the plant construction was commissioned by Italian waste treatment company HERAmbient to waste treatment solution provider Cesaro Mac (CMI).
The project was based on plans to treat organic waste generated in the region of the city of Bologna using methane fermentation technology.
CMI will use four steel digesters to form the core module of HZI-built Kompogas for the project, which is planned to be built in Bologna, Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy.
Construction of the biogas plant is scheduled to commence in July 2016 upon securing the final building permits while HZI will deliver the digesters by fall 2016 and complete in June 2018.
The plant is designed to produce 14,287,000 Nm3 of biogas from 100,000 tons of organic waste per year while reducing CO2 emissions.
The produced biogas, which will be sufficient for heating about 5,000 households, will be fed into Bologna’s supply grid.
Additionally, the plant’s 30,000t of compost produced will be sold to farms and garden centers in the region.
In 2014, HZI acquired the Kompogas assets of Axpo Kompogas Engineering.
