A call for papers has been released for Hidroenergia 04, the biennial conference organised by the European Small Hydropower Association (ESHA).

Hidroenergia 04, to be held in Falkenberg, Sweden from 17-19 June 2004, will focus on overcoming barriers faced by the small hydro sector and ways in which strengthen competitiveness.

The discussion will concentrate on three main areas: technical and operational innovations, environmental questions and institutional and financial aspects. Since Hidroenergia 2002, important advances have occurred in the field of small hydro power, including important EU legislation. With the implementation of the Directive 2001/77/EC, which promotes the electricity production of renewable energy sources, small hydro power is benefiting from several support schemes at national level. A Directive on the liberalisation of the electricity market has been implemented which guarantees a competitive and open electricity market where all European consumers (domestic and industrial) will be free to choose their supplier.

Hidroenergia 04 will create a ground for evaluating the improvements, discussing the concerns, proposing solutions and drawing the future path of the sector.

In addition, it will present the first results of the European project ‘Thematic Network on SHP’ coordinated by esha.

The call for papers is open until 30 January 2004. Authors can submit their paper on one of the following topics: technical & operational aspects, environmental aspects or institutional aspects and financing. Special emphasis will be given to papers incorporating success stories. Abstracts of about 500 words should be submitted in English, together with your contact details to ESHA.
