As a demonstration plant, the multiple Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology would be commercially used in it. Under the IGCC technology, syngas is used to drive turbines and generate electricity with less pollution.

The plant would extract hydrogen by gasifying coal, while sequestering the carbon dioxide emissions – the process is known as carbon capture and storage (CCS).

All engineering and design work has been completed. Major items of plant have been selected and are on order, and site preparation and foundation work is ready, said Lin Kai, GreenGen’s associate manager in their Department of Operation, Technology and International Cooperation.

Lin continued that, all components related to the plant would be manufactured domestically, except the gas turbine power unit which is to be imported. Its domestically produced components include the core feature, a novel gasifier designed by the Thermal Power Research Institute in Xi’an.

The GreenGen plant would be built in the Lingang Industrial Park of Tianjin, about 150 kilometers southeast of Beijing. The first phase of the plant is expected to commence in 2011, would generate 250 megawatts (MW) of power and is expected to realize 2000 tons/day of coal gasification.

The project is planned in three phases for 650MW of additional generation by 2016 and to capture 3500 tons/day of gasification.
