British energy utility Good Energy has agreed to purchase 12% of the electricity generated by the 210MW Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm located in the North Sea along the English coast.

The wind farm project is jointly owned by Dong, its operator which has a 50% stake, Marubeni and the UK Green Investment Bank with both having a 25% stake, as on July 2015.

Financial aspects of the power purchasing agreement were not disclosed.

The clean energy of nearly 105GWh bought by Good Energy would cover more than more than 26,000 households in the region.

Initially, the agreement is for a period of 12 months, but is likely to be extended for a longer duration in line with the broader cooperation between Dong and Good Energy.

Good Energy founder and CEO Juliet Davenport OBE said: “We’re delighted to be working with DONG Energy to bring offshore wind power to our customers for the first time. This agreement will help us meet ever-increasing demand for 100% renewable electricity as our customer base continues to grow.”

It also marks the first time a UK domestic supplier would be buying electricity from a specific DONG Energy offshore wind project.

Also in the plans is the gradual increase in the volume of power that will be purchased by Good Energy from the Westermost Rough project over the course of time.

Dong Energy trading & portfolio management head Søren Scherfig said: “For DONG Energy, the cooperation presents new opportunities, delivering green and integrated energy solutions in the wholesale market.

“We have an ambition to support the energy transformation in UK and become one of the UK's leading energy suppliers to Industrial customers and Independent Retailers. We want to supply sustainable, reliable and affordable energy to our customers.”

The Westermost Rough Offshore Wind Farm, located nearly 8km from the Holderness coast in Yorkshire, was built at a cost of £800m and was commissioned in July 2015. The project which features 35x6MW wind turbines from Siemens, generates energy that would be enough to cover the needs of more than 150,000 households.
