The agreement, in particular, identifies many areas of co-operation in the oil and gas sector. The identified areas of interaction include automation, information technology, telemechanics and telecommunications, power generation, compressor station equipment, offshore oil and gas field development technologies, building and installation of safety systems, energy conservation, new medical technologies and project financing.

Gazprom and Siemens have been co-operating since 1993. The initial projects have been implemented in the areas of telecommunications and technology process automation.

Previously, the companies created a Moscow-based digital communication zone and data transmission network, the Gazsvyaz, an automatic telephone exchange network, the Kaspiygazprom, and a communication network, the Gaztelecom, as well as developing an automated treatment unit at the Yamburgskoye hydrocarbon field.
