The company has commenced study to identify optimum approaches for investigating oil-bearing Paleozoic deposits, improve geological prospecting in the region and discover an additional 25 million tonnes of recoverable reserves.
The study is being conducted on the geological structure and conditions resulted in the formation of the pre-Jurassic complex at Gazpromneft-Vostok’s fields in the Tomsk Oblast.
Through gathering information from various theoretical and experimental approaches, Gazprom will create appropriate technologies to investigate promising facilities in the field.
Gazprom will scientifically adapt and modify the data in line with the underlying geology of the pre-Jurassic complex.
The basic research is expected to reveal new features and patterns, as the Paleozoic section was not adequately studied due to its complex structure.
Cumulative geological and technological factors helped to identify three characteristic zones among different hydrocarbon accumulations within the Tomsk Oblas. Based on investigation, six wells will be drilled between 2017 and 2019.
Specialists from the Gazprom Neft Science and Technology Centre will find out a selection of technologies suitable for the geological exploration of the strata of the pre-Jurassic complex.
The company has already started investigations through the first well.
Gazprom Neft’s Bazhenov project executive director Kirill Strizhnev said: “Paleozoic deposits have never been considered a target for geological prospecting. Deposits in sediments of this age have, mainly, been found opportunistically, while exploring other oil- and gas-bearing formations.”
“Realising the need for an integrated approach, we have put together a research programme directed at engaging the scientific community of the Tomsk region, and have, already, completed the drilling of the first exploratory well.”
