Fred. Olsen Windcarrier will install around half of the turbines at Dong Energy’s 1.2GW Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm in the UK.


Under the contract, the company will be responsible for transportation and installation of Siemens 7MW turbines at the Round 3 wind farm off Yorkshire.

The project will feature up to 240 wind turbines, each between 5MW to 8MW, and will be located 120km off the Yorkshire coast, covering about 407 square kilometres.

Fred. Olsen Windcarrier commercial and projects head Even Larsen said: "This is a very exciting project for us as it is the first large transport and installation project we will have worked on in the UK."

"Not only that, but it is our first project working with Dong Energy Wind Power."

Onshore construction of the project began in early 2016 with offshore construction due to start in 2018.

Upon completion, the project will become the world’s first gigawatt scale wind farm, far from shore.

The wind farm, which is expected to be operational by 2020, will have the capacity to supply more than 1 million UK homes with electricity.

ABB is delivering cable systems that will transport electricity from the eastern and western circuit of the Hornsea Project One wind farm to the UK’s east coast.

nkt cables is delivering high-voltage submarine export cable system, which will link the central circuit of the wind farm with the mainland grid, and also to the other circuits through two offshore interlinks.

Hornsea Project One is part of the Hornsea Offshore Wind Farm zone that has a maximum capacity of 4GW.
