Canada-based distribution utility Fortis, in partnership with Columbia Power and Columbia Basin Trust, has signed definitive agreements to construct a 335MW hydroelectric generating facility in British Columbia.

The facility, which is expected to cost approximately $900m, is sited near the Waneta Dam and powerhouse facilities on the Pend d’Oreille River, south of Trail.

Fortis owns a 51% interest in this Waneta Expansion project, and will operate and maintain the non-regulated investment when the facility comes into service, which is expected in spring 2015.

Fortis serves approximately 2.1 million gas and electricity customers and its regulated holdings include electric distribution utilities in five Canadian provinces and three Caribbean countries and a natural gas utility in British Columbia.

The company also owns and operates non-regulated generation assets across Canada and in Belize and Upper New York State.
