Fluor Corporation, an engineering and construction firm, said that it has been selected to perform a study for potential development of a 5GW solar park for South Africa's Department of Energy in the Northern Cape province.

Following the recent completion of a pre-feasibility study by Clinton Climate Initiative, Fluor will now develop conceptual master plan for the solar park.

The energy department of South Africa intends to establish a Solar Park Authority as a unit within the state-owned Central Energy Fund to facilitate the advancement of the project.

When fully developed, the solar park is expected to realize a total investment of more than $20bn.

The project will host solar technologies including photovoltaic (PV), concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) plants and concentrating solar power (CSP) technologies such as power tower and parabolic trough alternatives.
