The plants to be retired have a total generating capacity of 2,689MW and these facilities have generated approximately 10% of the electricity produced by the company over the past three years.
The company’s decision to close the facilities is related to the impact of new environmental rules and is based on the US Environmental Protection Agency Mercury and Air Toxics Standards and other environmental regulations.
FirstEnergy will retire the Bay Shore plant (Units 2-4), the Eastlake plant, the Ashtabula plant and the Lake Shore plant in Ohio; the Armstrong power station in Pennsylvania; and the R. Paul Smith power station in Maryland.
The plant retirements are subject to review for reliability impacts, if any, by regional transmission organization PJM Interconnection which controls the area where the facilities are located.
